Google AI Pro Free for 12 Months: How US College Students Claim It Before December 31, 2026

Verified against Google's offer pages on September 8, 2026. Google has changed these student terms twice this year, so confirm on the offer page before relying on any detail below.

Google is giving eligible college students in the US a free year of Google AI Pro, a plan that normally costs $19.99 a month. That is about $240 for free, and you have until December 31, 2026 to claim it.

What you get with the free Google AI Pro student plan

  • 4x higher Gemini usage limits compared to non-AI subscribers
  • Gemini Spark
  • Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, and other Google apps
  • 5 TB of storage across Drive, Gmail, and Photos

For a lot of us the 5 TB is the real win. Research datasets, thesis drafts, and four years of photos fit comfortably.

Who qualifies for the Google student offer

  • Enrolled at a higher education institution in the US
  • Verified through SheerID with a valid school email address
  • A personal Google Account, not your university-issued one
  • A valid payment method on the account at sign-up

Google lists enrollment as the requirement. Citizenship and visa status are not conditions, so F-1 and J-1 students qualify the same way domestic students do.

Not eligible: current members of someone else's Google One family group (leave the shared plan first), and anyone subscribed through Google Fi, Pixel Pass, or another third-party partner.

Two mistakes that cost people the offer

1. Signing up on your .edu account. SheerID verifies you with your school email, but the subscription must sit on a personal Google Account. Log out of your university Workspace account first.

2. Forgetting it auto-renews. A card is required at sign-up, and Google charges $19.99 a month automatically once the 12 months end. Set a cancellation reminder for one week before your renewal date in the same sitting you sign up. No US card yet? Sort that out before you start.

How to claim it in 5 steps

  1. Sign in to your personal Google Account.
  2. Go to one.google.com/ai-student.
  3. Select the student offer shown for your account.
  4. Complete SheerID verification with your school email.
  5. Add a payment method, finish checkout, then set your cancellation reminder.

Deadline: December 31, 2026, roughly 16 weeks away. SheerID can stall if your school is not auto-matched and you have to upload enrollment documents, so do not leave it to the last week.

Studying in Bangladesh? You get Google AI Plus instead

The AI Pro year is US-only. Students at institutions in Bangladesh qualify for the other half of the promotion: Google AI Plus free for 12 months, with Gemini Omni, 2x higher usage limits, and 400 GB of storage. Same deadline, same SheerID step, and it auto-charges $4.99 a month or local equivalent afterward. Send it to a sibling or friend at BUET, DU, NSU, or anywhere else back home.

One benefit we could not confirm

Google's announcement lists Google Health Premium as part of the US student plan, while the Google One help page says add-ons including Health Premium are unavailable with student offers. Treat it as unconfirmed until you see it on your own account.

FAQ

Is Google AI Pro really free for students? Yes, for 12 months, for eligible students at US institutions who verify through SheerID. It converts to $19.99 a month afterward unless you cancel.

Can international students on F-1 visas claim it? Yes. The requirement is enrollment at a US higher education institution, not citizenship.

What happens after the 12 months? Your plan converts to paid Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month automatically. Cancel any time before your renewal date to avoid the charge.
