If you are planning to study in Germany, you will inevitably run into uni-assist. Think of it as the ultimate gatekeeper: a centralized service used by over 180 German universities to evaluate whether your international school or university documents meet strict German legal standards.

Here is a practical and clear roadmap on exactly how to navigate the portal and submit your application without making costly mistakes:

✅Step 1: Double-Check the Rules for Your University

Before doing anything on uni-assist, look at the specific webpage for your chosen German course. You need to identify two things:

1. Does this specific course use uni-assist?
2. What is the application type? • Standard Procedure: Uni-assist checks your files and sends them to the university.  • VPD Procedure: Uni-assist checks your files, gives you a certificate, and you must then upload that certificate to the university's own application portal. 

✅Step 2: Set Up Your Profile

1. Head to the official website and click on My assist.
2. Create a new account using a valid email address.
3. Fill out your core personal details. Important: Ensure the spelling of your name exactly matches your passport.
4. Fill out your educational history completely.

✅Step 3: Find Your Courses

Once logged in, use the Course Search / Study Finder tool within the portal.

1. Filter by the semester you want, the university name, or the specific subject.
2. Select your course and click "Add to selection list."
3. This creates an individual application box for that course. You will be asked a few mandatory,course-specific questions . Answer these completely.

✅Step 4: Organize and Upload Your Documents

Go to the "My Applications" or "Documents" section. You only need to upload each document once even if you are applying to multiple universities.  What to Upload: • Academic History: High school certificates, university graduation certificates and your complete transcripts of records. • Official Translations: If your documents are not originally in English or German, you must upload court-certified translations alongside the original language versions.  • Language Certificates: Your IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF, or DSH scores.  • Identification: A clear scan of your passport data page.

Uni-assist will not touch, look at, or evaluate your documents until the payment clears. • Cost: €75 for the first course, and €30 for every additional course in the same semester.  • Payment Methods: Credit card (Visa/Mastercard) or bank transfer.

✅Step 6: Submit, Track and Wait

Review everything on your selection list and hit Submit. • Tracking: Your portal dashboard will update with statuses like "Received" or "In Progress." • The Wait: Expect a processing timeframe of 4 to 7 weeks. • The Outcome: Once finished, you will receive an evaluation letter in your portal inbox. If successful, it will either show your converted German GPA score and note that your data was forwarded to the university, or it will contain your downloadable VPD certificate to use for direct university portals.
