Founded in 1971 as a University of Applied Sciences the THM is one of the younger universities in Hesse. With approximately about 15,000 students over all (winter semester 2024/25) In 1838, a trade school was also established in Gießen, followed by the foundation of the Gießen Trade Association in 1840. Its members included renowned figures such as Justus von Liebig and Hugo von Ritgen.
