The name is sometimes shortened to the abbreviation "UoM" or the portmanteau "Miyadai." The predecessor of the school was founded in 1884, and it was chartered as a university in 2003. The university has undergraduate faculties in education and culture, regional innovation, medicine, engineering, and agriculture.
